GUNNEDAH SILO ART
Gunnedah is lucky to have two mega murals for visitors to admire!
Gunnedah’s original water reservoir was transformed into a historical museum and, after more than a decade of work by volunteers, it officially opened on 3 May 1980, housing four floors of collections of local history.
With growing interest in the Australian Silo Art Trail, the Gunnedah Historical Society set out to have their water tower painted with a mega mural. With the help of a Federal Government Grant, the society commissioned award-winning artist Jenny McCracken from Zest International Events to paint the mural. The society chose two iconic images from the Vietnam War for Jenny to use as her inspiration. The mural facing west features a group of soldiers from 7RAR waiting to be picked up the iconic Huey helicopters, while the mural facing north includes soldiers paying their respects beside the Long Tan Cross. The mural was unveiled on ANZAC Day 2019.
Dorothea Mackellar and the second verse of her iconic poem “My Country” are immortalised on a 29 metre high mural on the privately owned maize mill on Barber Street. Established silo artist Heesco completed the artwork featuring a stunning portrait of Dorothea, part of her poem in her own hand-writing, and a sunburnt landscape that inspired Dorothea to write her poem.
Both pieces of art are registered on the Australian Silo Art Trail Facebook site and feature in the Ultimate Road Trip Silo Art Guide.
